By Dr. Wayne Andersen The practice of medicine is slowly evolving to address the role that habit and lifestyle play in patient health, but the status quo for modern medicine is still largely reactionary. A patient comes in the door with symptoms of a condition, and we try to provide relief for those symptoms through prescriptions or through invasive medical procedures and when we do not address the core cause of a patient’s disease—which is often lifestyle related to obesity rates continue to rise—the patient inevitably returns with the same (or worse) symptoms as before. This was the cycle I saw again and again as a critical care physician. Under this limited view of how we help people address their health problems, potentially reversible conditions become chronic, lifelong burdens. For many patients—those who are on prescriptions to treat high cholesterol, or chronic pain or even in some cases type II…
She Is Already Intimate With Him – What Should I Do?
Physical intimacy remains a tricky issue to discuss when you have a teenage daughter. Most times, parents and guardians wait until something prompts them to discuss intimacy. This should not be the case, we often wonder, what is the appropriate age to start discussing this topic with our daughter? Specialists say it is never too early to start the discussion, I say do not wait until it is too late. While doing my daily rounds, I came across this question on Troubleshooter, an advice column that appears in the Japan News, and I felt it would be right to share this with parents, who may have been in this situation or find themselves edging towards the same. “I think you should focus on your role as a wife and mother.” Those were the words Beatrice received from a bank manager while bidding for a loan to start up a business. She had walked home unhappy under the scorching sun, again – she had been turned down by the bank who refused to give her a loan to start up her business. Each time Beatrice visits the bank, it turned out to be a bad day for her, they give her one hundred and one reasons why they think her business will never succeed. On this particular day she asked to see the bank manager who had conversed with her, and bluntly told her “we usually do not invest in women-owned businesses because we don’t think that they could sustain the pressure of growing a business, I think you should focus on your role as a wife and…
Trio of Strong Women Now At Helm of Affairs at the Nelson Mandela University
Nelson Mandela University (NMU) recently celebrated the inauguration of Professor Sibongile Muthwa as vice-chancellor and Dr. Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi as chancellor. They join NMU chair of the council, former ambassador Nozipho January-Bardill. “I am honoured to form part of this trio of women,” said Fraser-Moleketi at the ceremony. She said NMU was the only university to have three women at its helm, according to the NMU Facebook page. Fraser-Moleketi added that she was “deeply humbled” by the confidence the council and university community had in her. Her acceptance speech paid tribute to many prominent leaders, including the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and ANC veteran Zola Skweyiya, who she said were her former colleagues. The university announced Fraser-Moleketi, a former minister for public service and administration, as its new chancellor last month, effective from April 1. She was awarded an honorary doctorate at the institution last year for her contribution to leadership in…
