British Council Partners with Leading UK Universities to Support Malaysian Female Students in STEM

The British Council has launched a postgraduate scholarship programme in partnership with three leading UK universities — University of Glasgow, Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Stirling, aimed at benefiting Southeast Asian women with a background in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). According to UNESCO, fewer than 30 percent of researchers worldwide are women and only 30 percent of female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. The British Council seeks to increase this number by establishing programmes to support women in STEM around the world, from inspiring young girls to stay in the field to supporting working women in STEM to reach positions of leadership. Its latest programme provides fifteen full scholarships to women from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam who can demonstrate their need for financial support and who wish to inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in STEM. The scholarships will cover full tuition…

I am sorry, I am not sorry

By Kembet Bolton I had just run 1 hour straight on the treadmill in a local gym and was frantically looking for a spot to sit my butt. The only available spot was a little space in a couch where three ladies who haven’t lifted a dumbbell since they walked in sat and were chatting heartily. I squeezed myself in as I was too tired to ask for permission, the seat belongs to the gym after all. They were chatting loudly and I wasn’t sure if it was polite to listen to their conversation. I later rationalized that this wasn’t eavesdropping, as they were aware of my presence. It was an interesting conversation that kept me glued to the couch for more than thirty minutes, when normally I will only take two to three minutes break to catch my breath after an intense workout. One of the ladies, a tall…

Professor Ekanem Braide… An Academic Per Excellence

By Walcott Aganu Women in science do seem to find it challenging to be recognized and achieve academic excellence; this is particularly true in sub-Saharan Africa, due to cultural limitations and bias. Early-career female researchers don’t have many female role models for motivation and mentorship. However, this disposition is changing, and one of the names that have led the charge is Ekanem Braide, a professor of parasitology and epidemiology. Professor Ekanem Braide would surely be mentioned when women academics in Nigeria are being discussed. Today, on Amazons Watch, we look through her journey. Education Braide was born in Cross River State, Nigeria in 1946. She studied zoology at the University of Ife before obtaining her Master’s degree in Parasitology (1973), and a Doctorate in Epedimiology, Cornell University, New York (1978). She holds a Certificate in Epidemiological Methods from Southampton University (British Council Course). She is a Fellow and Co-founder, Nigerian…

Four Weeks Away from Your Dream Body

By Kembet Bolton It has been a while since I holidayed with my immediate family. So, when I had the opportunity during the last Christmas break, I couldn’t help but relax and enjoy all the delicacies that could only come from a chef mum’s kitchen. When I returned to my work station two weeks later and discovered all my work dresses were now very tight on me, it dawned on me that something had to give for all that enjoyment. I normally am a very active person physically. In the past ten years, I have sign up for different gym membership, dance classes and a whole lot of other fitness activities to make sure I stay in good shape physically. But in the past few months, my schedule changed dramatically. I moved to a part of town where the closest gym was almost two hours drive away, the road was…
