South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, has honoured five South African sportswomen with Ministerial Special Recognition awards for their excellence in sports.

The Minister handed out the honours at the 2021 Momentum Gsport Awards, an event that aims to recognize the achievements and contributions of athletes and women who work in sports in at least 27 categories.

Recipients of the Ministerial Special Recognition include Bianca Buitendag, Olympic silver medallist in surfing; Boipelo Awuah, South Africa’s youngest Olympian and skater at 15 years; Patience Shikwambana, Renowned sports administrator; Phumelela Mbande, South African hockey star, and Olympian; and, Tatjana Schoenmaker, Gold and silver Olympic medallist and world record holder in swimming.

According to Mthethwa, the women representing South Africa in sports continue to epitomize the meaning of being true ambassadors of the country as they remain true symbols of possibility and glory against all odds.

“Thank you once more for our women stealth and determination which warrants all forms of recognition. All our woman achievers continue to serve as an inspiration to a girl child, therefore, demonstrating that despite all adverse challenges, success must always remain absolute” he said.
