Oil and gas is one of the world’s most demanding industries, where success is measured by precision, resilience, and the ability to lead under pressure. It is also a sector where women have historically been underrepresented, making every breakthrough both significant and inspiring. Yet, against these odds, Fatoumata Sanogo has built an extraordinary career that spans continents, multinational energy companies, and some of the world’s most complex petroleum projects. Today, as the Managing Director of PETROCI Holding, Côte d’Ivoire’s national oil company, she is doing far more than making history as the first woman to hold the position. She is transforming the company’s fortunes and strengthening her nation’s energy sector through bold leadership and operational excellence.
Building a Foundation for Global Leadership
Fatoumata Sanogo’s journey began at the Institut National Polytechnique Félix Houphouët Boigny (INP HB) in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, where she studied petroleum engineering. She later earned an Executive MBA from Hult International Business School in Boston, complementing her engineering expertise with executive leadership skills. This strong academic foundation prepared her for an international career spanning more than two decades across Africa, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
An International Career Defined by Excellence
Sanogo began her professional career with Schlumberger (now SLB), where she specialised in designing and managing complex oil well operations across Germany, the United States, Italy, Scotland, Chad, and the Republic of Congo. Her technical expertise later earned her consulting roles on major oil projects in Iraq, where she worked alongside global industry leaders, including ENI, ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, and Halliburton.
In 2011, she joined OMV Petrom, Eastern Europe’s largest integrated energy company, where she managed well completion projects in the Black Sea while mentoring young engineers. Two years later, she moved to TotalEnergies, holding senior engineering and management positions across Angola, Algeria, Scotland, and France. Throughout her international career, she gained extensive experience in drilling, production, project management, and offshore operations while leading multicultural teams across several countries. Fluent in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Romanian, she has become widely respected for combining technical expertise with global leadership.
Transforming PETROCI Holding
On 18 July 2023, Fatoumata Sanogo was appointed Managing Director of PETROCI Holding, becoming the first woman to lead Côte d’Ivoire’s national oil company. Bringing with her more than twenty years of international experience, she assumed leadership at a critical time and quickly introduced reforms that revitalised the organisation.
Within her first year, PETROCI recorded one of the most impressive financial turnarounds in the African energy sector. Under her leadership, the company’s net profit rose from approximately FCFA 2.5 billion in 2022 to FCFA 20.6 billion by the end of 2023, while disciplined cost management reportedly generated savings of about FCFA 12 billion.
The company’s strong performance continued over the following years, with sustained growth in turnover, operating profit, and net profit despite fluctuations in global oil prices and increased investment in strategic projects. This success has been driven by rigorous cost control, improved operational efficiency, increased crude oil and butane gas sales, and the continued development of the landmark Baleine oil and gas field, one of Côte d’Ivoire’s most significant energy projects. Beyond the financial results, Sanogo has strengthened corporate governance, enhanced organisational efficiency, and reinforced PETROCI’s role in advancing the country’s energy security and economic development.
Inspiring a New Generation of Women in Energy
While her corporate achievements have attracted international attention, Sanogo’s influence extends far beyond business performance. As one of the few women to lead a national oil company in Africa, she has become an inspiration to women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Throughout her career, she has remained committed to mentoring young professionals and encouraging greater female participation in the energy industry. Her success demonstrates that expertise, determination, and continuous learning remain the most powerful tools for breaking barriers and creating lasting impact.
International Recognition
Fatoumata Sanogo’s transformational leadership has earned her recognition both within Africa and internationally. In May 2024, she received the prestigious Elephant Award (Grand Prix Éléphant) at the Africa Energies Summit in London, recognising her exceptional contribution to Africa’s energy industry and her outstanding leadership of PETROCI Holding.
Her influence was further celebrated at the Global Power Women Awards 2025 in London, organised by the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD), UK, where she received the African Female Leadership Impact Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to corporate leadership, economic development, and the advancement of women in the energy sector. Her remarkable achievements were also featured in Amazons Watch Magazine, the flagship publication of the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development, where her story was profiled as an inspiring example of visionary leadership transforming Africa’s energy landscape.

Fatoumata Sanogo has built a career defined by technical excellence, visionary leadership, and measurable impact. From managing complex petroleum projects across continents to leading Côte d’Ivoire’s national oil company through one of its most successful periods of growth, she has demonstrated what purposeful leadership can achieve.
