Creating Safety for Health Workers on the Frontlines Amid Covid-19

“Every single epidemic, I lose colleagues. Doctors/nurses/lab scientists, people I knew personally, people whose work I have followed”

As the reality of the global pandemic continues to stare us in the face, here in Amazons Watch Magazine, our hearts go to all medical personnel and health workers on the frontlines of the battle against Covid-19.

All across the nations of the earth, health workers are putting their lives in line on a daily basis to ensure that the world is delivered from this deadly virus.

While the rest of the world has been asked to stay at home in order to save their lives, more than a few medical personnel have taken their last breath in the fight against coronavirus.

Moreso, the world is also faced with a shortage of medical facilities and equipment, which poses a danger to the lives of this category of people.

In the same vein, we would like to give kudos to amazons like Dr. Ola Brown who are not only working to save lives but also engaging their minds in strategical thinking of innovative ways to help protect the lives of medical personnel on the frontline.

Dr. Brown is a Nigerian UK-trained medical doctor and founder of Flying Doctors, Nigeria. She also leads Greentree Investment Fund — an early-stage sector-agnostic investor in technology companies with a portfolio that currently includes Paystack, MDaaS Global, Eazyhire, and five other startups.

Dr. Brown is 34-year-old and holds academic qualifications in Economics and Accounting.

Dr. Brown recently developed a special walk-in COVID-19 testing booth that can save many lives and most importantly protect medical personnel and health workers from contracting the deadly virus whilst on duty.

This mobile testing booth has been designed to cut down on the use of single-use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which are in short supply.

This walk-in testing booth has been designed with a glove that allows healthcare workers to put their hands into it and take samples while in the booth and never come into direct contact with the patient. The gloves in the testing booth will be sprayed down from a distance by a hygienist after every sample is taken; this drastically reduces risk and spread of coronavirus.

The product also reduces the need for as much PPE as there is a glass window between patient and health worker and there is no direct contact at all. At the end of this, there is safety for healthcare workers and costs cut at the same time.

According to Dr. Brown, it took about two weeks of experimenting with different materials and learning from South Korea where booths have been used extensively before the testing booth was finally produced. Currently, some of the newly developed testing booths have already been shipped to clients for usage. The news mobile testing booth will expand access to testing and help to reduce the risk to healthcare workers.

Dr. Brown also hopes that with this new development she would be able to ramp up COVID-19 testing in Africa and keeping frontline health workers safe while significantly cutting down on the need for single-use PPE, which can be quite expensive.

About Dr. Ola Brown

Dr. Brown was raised by her foster parents in Lowestoft, London, England. She graduated from Hull York Medical School at the age of 21, becoming the youngest medical doctor in the United Kingdom.

At the beginning of her career, she first worked at the United Kingdom National Health Service, but this lasted for only a while.

In 2007, Dr. Brown started the first operation of emergency medical services in West Africa, Flying Doctors Nigeria, Ltd., which took place in Lagos, Nigeria. She was propelled to kick start this operation following the death of her sister who died under difficult circumstance.

Although Flying Doctors Nigeria Ltd. Began on the premise of Dr. Brown sister’s death, her major goal is to improve medical service in Nigeria and prevent more people from becoming victims.

This air ambulance service helps to transport patients from areas where they have a poor level of care to other locations with more suitable levels of care.

Since its inception, the air ambulance business has since developed into the Flying Doctors Healthcare Investment Company, which is helping companies operating in the healthcare and wellness space to expand and grow.

Dr. Ola Brown is truly an Amazon to Watch.
