The Association of Soninkara Women Entrepreneurs Gambia Branch and Gambia Action France Branch, over the weekend distributed bags of sugar, rice and cooking oil to needy families within the Kanifing Municipality.
The presentation ceremony was held at Star TV/FM and coordinated and chaired by its chief executive officer, Alpha Karanga.
The donors say the gesture is part of their contribution to complement government’s efforts in the fight against covid-19 and to encourage needy families to stay at home in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19, which is currently affecting more than two million people including The Gambia.
Musa Kijera, who presented the items on behalf of Gambia Action France Branch said, “currently, we’re in the covid-19 pandemic and most of the people are staying at home. In fact, some people entirely depend on the little they sell outside for survival. Therefore, if those people are staying at home as part of measures taken by the government to stop the spread of the virus, I believe it’s paramount to support them at this trying time.”
He said the donation is very special to them especially at this time when the world is battling the deadly Covid-19 pandemic and urged the government to take the lead in supporting people in this difficult situation of the covid-19.
“As we speak, many people are forced to sit at home while others have lost their economic sources. This is why the organisation thought it prudent to support the most vulnerable,” he added.
Isatou Simaha, vice president of Soninkara Women Entrepreneurs Gambia Branch, dwelled on the significance of the donated items to the beneficiaries while urging them to use it for the intended purpose.
She explained that the Soninkara Women Entrepreneurs Gambia Branch was established this year with the fundamental objective to support and empower women, particularly those involved in entrepreneurship with a view to help them showcase their talents on what they can do in terms of business development among others.
“There are many women out there who want to be involved in business but they could not due to their limited knowledge on how to start it. We, therefore, decide to form this organisation in order to be supporting each other in our quest to better prepare to become great entrepreneurs in the country.”
According to her, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the women involved in business are currently affected and that is affecting the livelihood of many families.
Amie Simaha from the Soninkara Women Entrepreneurs said her organisation comprises Sarahule women entrepreneurs targeting to promote women entrepreneurship in The Gambia. “We need to support the needy people especially in this trying time of the coronavirus pandemic.”
Muhammed Gikineh, a beneficiary, expressed delight for the two associations on behalf of the beneficiaries and urged other philanthropists to join hands with the government to support the needy.
